Red oak is a popular hardwood that can be used for a variety of applications. Red oak lumber is typically straight grained with a coarse texture and prominent rays. This lumber has a light reddish tan heartwood and a narrow, nearly white sapwood. Red oak lumber is hard, strong, and stiff with moderate stability. Because it has a high crush strength and a medium bending strength and stiffness, it is considered a very good steam bending wood. This lumber takes stain well and can be polished to a good finish. Red oak lumber machines well but can splinter and chip when cut against the grain. Because red oak lumber is a hardwood, it can be difficult to work by hand. This lumber glues satisfactory and holds nails and screws satisfactory, with pre-drilling recommended.
