Installing Ipe Decks

Ipe Decking Installation

Whether you are building an Ipe deck yourself or working with a contractor, there are many important things to consider to ensure the success of your project. Some of the important things to consider when it comes to installing Ipe decking range from acclimatization to pre-drilling, and more. Here are some of the points to check before and throughout your Ipe decking project:

Prior to Installation

  • Permits, etc. - Before beginning any deck construction project, it is important to have everything in place from a building codes and permits perspective. If you are working with a contractor, this is usually something they will handle on your behalf.
  • Storage - Another important step to ensure proper deck construction is to acclimatize your decking properly for your project. To do this, it is recommended that the decking should be able to sit where it will be installed for one full week prior to installation. This step allows the wood to adjust to the local climate. However, it is not recommended to store the decking directly on the ground, or on a concrete surface. Nor should you allow it to sit for over 30 days. Lastly, do not cover it with any kind of tarp or other plastic-based covering as the trapped moisture can lead to instability in the wood. Instead, you can cover it with plywood in order to shed any gathering water.

During Installation

  • Gap Spacing - For most deck installation projects, it is recommended to leave a gap between the deck boards of about 3/32" as this will allow the planks room to contract and expand, depending on the weather. It also allows for good air flow.
  • Ventilation - Make sure your deck design encourages decent cross ventilation under the deck as well. This works towards ensuring a stable, sturdy deck.
  • Cutting & Drilling - Ipe is a very dense wood, which can make it notoriously difficult to work with. Carbide tipped saw blades are recommended for cutting the pieces into shape. You may also wish to pre-drill the wood before construction, and for any drilling, consider using brad point drill bits or fostner bits to get smoother holes than a standard drill bit would allow. For even easier deck installation, consider Ipe clip kits which feature hidden fasterns to save time and ensure more secure installation.
  • Sealing - All ends must be sealed after cutting, using a product such as anchor seal Trade Mark.

Ipe Clip Kits Make Deck Construction Easy

As Ipe is a very dense wood, this makes it ideal for sturdy, maintenance free, and lasting decks. However, this can also lead to problems and difficulties during construction, as it can be difficult to screw and can bend nails. With this in mind, St. Charles Hardwoods has simplified the process of picking and installing your Ipe decking with our Ipe Clip Kits.

These kits utilize hidden fasteners, which will save time while also making installation of your Ipe decking that much easier. This hidden fastener method ensures more consistent installation while firmly holding your deck in place, ultimately adding to the longevity of your deck.

Whether you choose to install the Ipe decking yourself or to hire a contractor to help with the process, the feeling you have while relaxing on your deck with a nice drink in your hand and the sun on your face for the first time will be indescribable. We want that feeling to last for you, which is why we include everything you need in a kit for installing your Ipe deck.
